Symbol Readability-Subway Exit | 심볼 가독성-지하철 출구

In the previous article,
I wrote about Labels. Hopping Labels

Recently, I am very into readability of maps.

What I think about a good map is
geometric and text information are well mingled without any eyesoar.

• Eyesore <- this is very vague and controversial,
  for some people might not think what I think is an eyesore.

Anyway, the best way of minimizing the side-effect of mingling the two information is, I keep saying,
“the balance”.

Despite of balancing the information, “important features” should outstand.

The list of important features can be

• Highway Exits (in the U.S.)
• Subway/Rail Stations and Exits (in big cities)
• Landmark Buildings
• Spacious Parks
• and so forth…
  

Because I found out noticeable changes in Google Maps,
I chose to introduce Subway/Rail Station Exits for this article.

In big and complicating cities like Tokyo, Seoul, Chicago and New York City,
the rail/subway exits one of the keys to find routes.

Let’s say you are explaining a location using this map below.
There are so many roads and buildings.


You can’t label them all in this small space.
What can be landmarks in this region then?
Meanwhile,
you can simply tell the position of something using exits.

However, Google Maps did not exaggerate the exit symbol until a few weeks ago.

Luckily,
I was able to find an old styled google maps.

One is Google Maps in 2017 and the other one is in 2019
You can easily notice the exit numbers.

Numazu, where my good friend lives, all exits are changed to new symbol style

But not all Japanese rail/subway exits are changed.

Shinjuku Nishiguchi
Exit Number 7 is duplicated somehow.

Kobe Kotoen

Osaka Nanba

Yes, there still are a lot more things to do in making maps.

  왜냐하면 몇몇 사람들에게는 제가 생각하는 눈엣가시가 아니라고 생각할 수 있기 때문입니다.

어쨋던, 저는 계속 얘기합니다만, 그 두개의 정보를 섞을때 부작용을 최소화 하는 방법은,
“균형” 입니다.

정보의 균형을 맞추는것임에도 불구하고, “중요한 것들”은 눈에 띄어야 합니다.

중요한 것들의 리스트는 다음과 같습니다

• 고속도로 출구 (미국의)
• 지하철/철도 역 및 출구 (대도시의)
• 랜드마크 빌딩
• 넓은 공원
• 등등…
  

제가 구글 지도에서 눈에 띌만한 변화를 찾았기 때문에,
이번 글에서는 지하철/철도 역 출구를 소개하기로 했습니다.

도쿄, 서울, 시카고 그리고 뉴욕과 같은 크고 복잡한 도시에서는,
지하철/철도 출구는 길 찾기에 중요한 키 입니다.

아래의 지도를 사용해서, 여러분이 동네를 탐험한다고 해봅시다.
여기에는 많은 도로와 건물이 있습니다.


여러분은 이 좁은 공간에 레이블/주기를 다 달 수 없습니다.
그럼 이 지역에 어떤것이 랜드마크가 될 수 있을까요?
그러는 동안,
여러분은 간단하게 출구를 이용하여 어떤곳의 위치를 말할 수 있습니다.

하지만, 구글은 몇 주전 까지만 하더라도 출구의 심볼을 강조하지 않았습니다.

운좋게도,
저는 구글 지도의 예전 스타일을 찾을 수 있었습니다.

하나는 2017년의 구글지도이고, 다른것은 2019년의 것입니다
여러분은 쉽게 출구 번호를 확인할 수 있습니다.

제 좋은 친구가 사는 누마즈에서는 모든 출구가 새로운 심볼 스타일로 변했습니다

하지만, 모든 일본의 지하철/철도 출구가 변하진 않았습니다.

출구 번호 7은 어째서인지 중복이 있습니다.
